Militia Raids

Children encounter guardsmen looking for hidden weapons.  Militia searched ranches and farms for guns since local families gave miners food and a place to stash firearms.

Eleven-year-old Gustav Snisky’s home was ransacked by guardsmen hunting for hidden weapons.  The soldiers kicked Gustav in the back, destroyed family belongings and stole food and money from the Snisky Ranch.

The “Death Special” -an armored car designed to spread fear.  The Colorado Fuel & Iron Company covered an ordinary car with steel places, adding a machine gun and spotlight.

At night, private detectives tore through the tent colony, spraying bullets into tents.

When eleven-year-old Frank Snyder was killed in the crossfire, his father, William, refused to abandon him. Crying “they’re shooting children!” he lifted his son’s body on his shoulder and carried him across the live battlefield to shelter.
